College in Prison

Free college in prison is going to benefit society when inmates are released from prison. Over the past decades, government had convicted some innocent people to prison without enough evidence. Because of lack of forensic evidence in the past century, it was not clear if the person was guilty or not. When governments are pressured to find closure from the tragic incident that have occurred , they have no option but to convict the person of interest. They either give the person life in prison without parole or sentence the person to death. In the nineteenth century, forensic evidence became an huge part in finding closures to what happened to the victim. https://www.troopers.ny.gov/Crime_Laboratory_System/History/Forensic_Science_History/

According to telegraph news, a man was incarcerated for 39 years after he was found not guilty.

If the man received his associate or bachelor degree while in jail, it would benefit him because he would be able to look for a job or open his own business with the large sum of  money that the state gave him.

A lot of inmates have lived behind bars for years. When they are released from jail, they do not know what the future holds for them. Without further due, congress should pass a bill that would require free college for prison inmates. Some inmates who are released from jail without the right skills for a job ends up back in jail for fear of the unknown. For instance, they can not get a job because they lack the knowledge of performing the task of the job. Therefore, they have no choice but to break the law so that they can go back to jail.  http://www.nationalreview.com/phi-beta-cons/372264/free-college-prison-inmates-jesse-saffron

The governor of Albany, Cuomo said that it cost the state $60,000 a year to house each inmate. New York’s recidivism rate is 40 percent and studies show that when inmates earn college degrees, they are far less likely to return to prison. “Giving men and women in prison the opportunity to earn a college degree costs our state less and benefits our society more,” Cuomo said in a release.

Society would benefit from the outcome if inmates have the opportunity to earn an associate or bachelor degree while in jail. There would be less crime and less spending from the government to provide for the inmates. Furthermore, governments can use the money on other important things such as climate change, fight Isis, and more training for law enforcement.

  1. While this is an interesting concept, I don't know if I fully agree with the 'free' part. I have many friends working for financial aid in order to pay for school. So, my idea is that since inmates commonly work while incarcerated, then their salary could go towards their schooling which would also be administered while they are still in jail as you've written. However, I think your idea is great in helping give the people in jail important things to do, rather than 'buy time.'

  2. Most People in US start their lives with loans. Some of them qualify for financial aid.
In other countries the colleges are free. I completed my college education without paying any fees.and now I'm studying at Nova and paying the tuition fees around $480 for 3 credit . I wish that everybody is provided the opportunity to receive free education.

  3. While there are certainly inmates in prisons that are sentenced for crimes that they did not commit, the overwhelming majority of prisoners are behind bars for committing a crime. I sincerely have no pity on a person that belongs in prison so therefore I can not be swayed to feel that prisoners deserve anything, let alone a college degree. I work long and hard and am in financial debt so that I can obtain my college degree. I do agree with you that they should become educated while in prison. This education certainly should give them the know how to be a productive citizen. I would suggest a program such as Work Force. This is one area in which our government is failing not only the prisoner but the safety of citizens.

  4. This is a great concept and I would not mind having my tax dollars going to this. This can cause a stop to the indivuials cycle. Once you go to jail youre more inclined to go back. This way they can educate themselves and become productive members of society. Even if they do not want to go to school they can learn a trade or even learn skills for when they need to work.

  5. I totally agree with this! I would love my tax dollars going to this because I would fee like Im making a difference. Just because people make mistakes, doesn't mean they should have the right to an education taken away from them!

  6. I agree with this. I think people should get a second chance due to the mistakes that they had in their lives. At least they are trying to better themselves and learn. No sense in keeping people locked up and coming out the same way they went in
