Is underage drinking really the problem?

What should be the legal drinking age for the American people? As a matter of fact, America finds itself on a list with 11 other countries with the highest legal drinking age (not counting countries where alcohol consumption is illegal).

There have been several studies on underage drinking in the US. One of these studies focused on the unintentional injury, death, and other problems among college students, age ranging from 18-24, in relation to alcohol consumption. The conclusion of the article was that "The persistence of college drinking problems underscores an urgent need to implement prevention and counseling approaches identified through research to reduce alcohol-related harms among college students and other young adults." Which is an interesting point.

What should be stressed more; lowering the drinking age, or teaching Americans how to be smarter with their drinking habits?

I think we should focus more on teaching people to be smarter with alcohol and removing the stigma that is associated with it.

There are plenty of other areas in life that I would argue are more dangerous than drinking, like driving. Driving in general is a dangerous form of transportation. This article just scratches the surface of the dangers of driving, it does a quick breakdown of cause of death by age group, and astoundingly motor-vehicle accidents are always first or second in the cause of death.

So should we raise the driving age because it is dangerous to drive or provide more instruction, so when people do drive they know what they are doing.

What do you think?
What is a better solution; raising the drinking age, lowering the drinking age, and or providing more education of the effects of alcohol?

  1. I have witnessed deadly accident due to underage drinking. Congress should pass a bill to increase the age drinking to 24.
It would benefit people and reduced fetal accident. I'm a Christian, but I do not drink because my body can not tolerate it. You made a good statement

  2. All the points provided within the article have very good points. As stated in the previous comment a lot of benefits would occur if the drinking age was increased aslant of negative incidents would decrease and ensure a safe environment.
