Responsibilities as a citizen

       Responsibilities as a Citizen

Citizen responsibilities to our government should be pretty straightforward. Do not kill, do not steal, pay taxes etc.

When you become a resident or a citizen of a certain country or state you automatically consent to the laws of that particular country or area. On the other hand, the government was created for the people. To help and guide society.

Therefore when it comes to responsibilities, it is subjective to the place or country where you live. For example some countries require you to serve some time in the armed forces.

However when it comes to the U.S. I believe your only responsibility as a citizen should be to follow the law.

According to the U.S.Citizenship and Immigration Services (www.uscis.gov) there are several rights and responsibilities to a U.S. citizen. Some responsibilities they mention are:
  • Support and defend the Constitution.
  • Stay informed of the issues affecting your community.
  • Participate in the democratic process.
  • Respect and obey federal, state, and local laws.
  • Respect the rights, beliefs, and opinions of others.
  • Participate in your local community.
  • Pay income and other taxes honestly, and on time, to federal, state, and local authorities.
  • Serve on a jury when called upon.
  • Defend the country if the need should arise.
Some of these responsibilities are legally required of every citizen according to the USCIS.

So in conclusion your only responsibility the government as a citizen is to follow the law of the land. Everything else similar to helping out thy neighbor and such, does not fall under a responsibility to our government but rather a responsibility to humanity and a moral guide.

  1. You make a great point about automatic consent. The issue then is that when a law is unethical, it's that same citizen's job to speak up and out and help motivate changes, either through lobbying, activism, or elections.
I think the heart of being an American is emotional in nature. We're very tied to our images and history, and we're still working the kinks out. Following the laws is step #1, certainly!
